The Department of Ophthalmology is a surgical subspecialty in this hospital which has grown tremendously in the last few years. In the year 2011 we saw a total number of 3132 patients and carried out a total number of twenty one (21) operations.

UNIT ACTIVITY
The department runs 2 outpatient clinics, one theatre day, departmental ground rounds and emergencies. We do offer low vision services, visual rehabilitation and contact lens services.  We also train residents and medical students.
ACHIEVEMENTS
The clinic which started as an optometric clinic has grown to a full ophthalmology clinic with different ranges of services offered, training of resident doctors in ophthalmology, medical students and other cadre of students. In the year being reported, we were able to start the low vision services after one of the optometrists had been trained.
Significant achievements were made during the year 2011 include:

    • Two new staff were added to       the department.
    • 2011 World Sight day was       celebrated with outreaches to primary school, secondary school and Akpan       Andem market. Over 800 patients were screened and treated and fifteen eye       surgeries were done during the free eye service.
    • Equipments for the optical       laboratory were delivered.
    • Equipments for intraocular       surgery, fundus  camara etc were delivered
    • Equipments for Federal       Secretariat clinic supplied

CONCLUSION
For us to make our impact, bring our patients to the recommended WHO visual status and achieve vision 2020-The Right to Sight, the government / hospital management must  invest in Eye Health Services
