House Committee on Health Institutions Commends UUTH Management During Oversight Visit

The Committee on Health Institutions from Nigeria’s House of Representatives, led by its Chairman, Dr. Patrick Umoh has commended the Chief Medical Director and management of the University of Uyo Teaching Hospital (UUTH) for their efforts in improving healthcare delivery in the state.

The commendation came during an oversight visit by the committee to the hospital, where members undertook a facility tour as part of their statutory responsibilities. Addressing the press Dr. Umoh noted that such oversight functions were critical components of the National Assembly’s mandate, aimed at ensuring accountability, transparency, and improved service delivery in government institutions, especially within the health sector.

He praised the visible improvements and efforts by the hospital administration, describing UUTH as a promising hub for tertiary healthcare service in the region. According to him, “We are impressed by the level of commitment demonstrated by the leadership of this hospital. Oversight visits like this give us the opportunity to see first-hand the challenges, successes, and areas that require further government intervention.”

Dr. Umoh further commended President Bola Ahmed Tinubu for the significant increase in the allocation to the health sector in the 2025 budget cycle, noting that such financial commitment reflects the administration’s dedication to strengthening the nation’s healthcare system.

He emphasized the importance of sustaining collaborative efforts between the government and government establishments to ensure that institutions like UUTH who primarily serve humanity are adequately funded, equipped, and staffed to meet the growing healthcare needs of Nigerians.

The visit featured an inspection of key hospital departments, and discussions on areas requiring federal government support, especially in infrastructure, manpower, and equipment.

The Chief Medical Director, Professor Emem Bassey and top hospital’s management staff, expressed gratitude for the committee’s visit and pledged continued commitment to delivering quality healthcare services in line with national standards.

Present on the occasion were other members of the team including Deputy Chairman of the Committee Dr. Adesola Adedayo, Hon. Mark Esset and the Clerk Hakilu Abbas, while on the side of the hospital were the Director of Administration Dr Joseph J Akpan and Chairman Medical Advisory Committee Dr Clement UdoInyang among other management staff.
